COAL IN LOCAL D. & H. YARD

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y., February 19, 1923 — Officials of the City of Saratoga Springs took direct action today to provide coal for emergency cases, which they said could get relief by no other method.

Dr. Arthur J. Leonard, commissioner of public safety, heading a detachment of policemen and firemen, went to the Delaware & Hudson railroad yard about 11 o’clock this morning and seized, in the name of the city, nine cars loaded with anthracite coal.

Throwing a guard about them, he made efforts to have a Delaware & Hudson switch engine pull two of the cars to the Congress Street yard of the Saratoga Coal Company for distribution to emergency cases, but the crew refused. Dr. Leonard then officially seized a switch engine, placed on it a crew of police employees who were former railroad men, and had the cars taken to the Congress Street yards.

Meanwhile, a force of Delaware & Hudson detectives, headed by Edward T. Carroll, former chief of police here, boarded the engine and ordered the crew off. The police resisted, threw the detectives off the train and arrested one of them while the crowd cheered. The work then proceeded.

Shortly after one o’clock one car had been dumped in the yards and volunteer shovelers were unloading the other. When the Saratoga Coal Company refused to cooperate, Dr. Leonard notified Edward B. Before two o’clock the Fire Department truck was on its way about the city filling emergency orders.

He told The Saratogian that, at the time of the seizure, he had in his pocket approximately one hundred emergency orders received over Sunday from persons unable to secure coal.

During the struggle Henry Hickman, a railroad detective, was arrested on a charge of interfering with a police officer and ordered to appear in Police Court the following morning.

The volunteer crew then switched two cars from the main line onto the Congress Street siding without further interference.

Ashton Refuses Cooperation

Leonard telephoned Edward B. Ashton, president of the Saratoga Coal Company, requesting his cooperation in distributing coal to emergency cases.

Ashton refused and ordered company employees from the yard.

Leonard thereupon announced that he was taking possession of the Congress Street coal yards under the emergency powers he claimed under the State health laws.

Later Ashton began legal proceedings to eject the commissioner, serving papers upon Leonard, who accepted them without comment.

Thus ended one of the most unusual and successful conventions Saratoga Springs has entertained in recent years—the Forty-Seventh Annual Convention of the New York State Undertakers Association, which for three days transformed the Casino and Congress Park into the center of New York’s funeral profession.

More than seven hundred members and visitors attended the gathering, which combined serious discussions of professional advancement with entertainment, exhibits, social events, and an atmosphere of fellowship that surprised many unfamiliar with the modern undertaker.

Greater Unity the Opening Theme

The convention opened Tuesday morning in the Casino with an address by L. A. Guenther, president of the association, whose plea for greater unity among funeral directors established the keynote for the meeting.

Delegates from Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, New York City, Utica, and scores of smaller communities filled the convention hall as registration reached impressive proportions.

“Your profession illustrates the tremendous advances made in recent years,” he said. “I doubt if any profession has been more advanced.”

“The old minister’s idea used to be to make funerals as long and as grim as possible,” he observed. “It used to seem to me that funerals had the object of not only burying the dead, but making more dead to bury.”

Mr. Boutwell urged the undertakers to become “opportunists.”

“To make the best of a bad business. Death abounds and sin abounds and we both have work to do.”

Defining an opportunist, he declared: “An opportunist is a man who knocks a wolf at the door and comes out the next day wearing a fur coat.”

The Casino Becomes a Showroom

The huge bronze sarcophagus proved one of the most discussed exhibits.

Nearby stood funeral wreaths, clothing for the dead, embalming supplies, and instruments used in preparing the body after death.

Funeral cars were displayed outside the building, while inside were examples of casket-lowering machinery, artificial wreaths, fraternal emblems, funeral furnishings, and every variety of equipment employed by the modern funeral director.

The black casket has gone, undertakers say, and the coffin departed years ago from the northern parts of the United States. In the poorer parts of the South it still is used a bit, but the receptacle which used to be surrounded much narrower at the foot end than at the head has definitely gone from the North.

One company had on display a metal casket, the top and sides of which were most beautifully decorated with small roses.

Everything that could possibly be needed at a funeral was on display.

The beautiful dresses, many of them in bright and cheerful colors, made just as dresses for the living are, looked more like the display for a ladies’ furnishing house than an undertakers’ exhibit.

Companies manufacturing suits, shoes and other wearing apparel for the use of undertakers, and companies which make a specialty of providing artificial wreaths, pieces and fraternal emblems all had displays at the Casino.

Even the garments displayed by manufacturers resembled exhibits from a fashionable furnishing store rather than the merchandise traditionally associated with funeral establishments.

The exhibits reflected the remarkable transformation that has occurred in funeral service during recent decades.

Dancing Among the Caskets

If the exhibits represented the serious side of the profession, the convention’s social features demonstrated another side entirely.

A vaudeville entertainment, orchestra music, dancing, and informal gatherings occupied much of the delegates’ leisure hours. The most remarkable scene occurred during the convention dance.

The caskets were not removed. Rows of polished mahogany cases remained in place around the walls while the orchestra played modern dance music and couples crossed the floor.

The contrast attracted immediate attention. Music formed a strange accompaniment to the solemn furnishings surrounding the dancers. Yet the atmosphere was anything but gloomy.

The metal beds used in the more modern establishments for the reception of bodies until caskets can be procured did not create the slightest uneasiness. They looked comfortable and inviting.

As the convention entered its final day, reports circulated that a strong effort would be made to bring the organization back to Saratoga next year. Members pointed to the city’s hotel accommodations, transportation facilities, and demonstrated efficiency in handling large gatherings.

Many delegates expressed admiration for Saratoga’s ability to combine the conveniences of a larger city with the atmosphere of a resort community.

Each hour, highly accurate time signals are transmitted from Washington, D.C., where federal observatories maintain the national standard. Those signals travel over Western Union wires to cities and towns throughout the country.

In Saratoga Springs, the signal reaches a master clock located in the local office. From that clock, public clocks throughout the city are corrected and synchronized. The process occurs so quietly and automatically that most residents never notice it.

Yet every merchant opening a shop, every train conductor checking a schedule, every banker recording a transaction, every newspaper editor stamping a dispatch, and every race official timing an event depends upon the precision of that system.

Where dry-battery machinery once performed the task, motor-driven generators now provide the correction signals. The result is more accurate and dependable time service for the city.

The work has been supervised by W. H. Moffatt, New York plant inspector, assisted by Foreman W. J. Gandon and installers C. M. Sornell, J. C. Dorman, and Harry Coppernoll.
